CONGRATULATIONS TO TWO LONG-STANDING SCHOOLS OF
NURSING
FANEL congratulates the Conemaugh Valley Medical Center School of Nursing,
Johnstown, PA which, in October 2011, celebrated 115 years of producing
qualified employable nurses. FANEL also congratulates the Beebe School of
Nursing, Lewes, DE, which, in October 2011, celebrated its 90th anniversary,
and received $3 million for use in building a new school, with a name change
to Margaret H. Rollins School of Nursing at Beebe Medical Center.
CHANGES IN HEALTHCARE ENVIRONMENT REQUIRE NURSES TO BROADEN SCOPE OF
PRACTICE
The January 2011 issue of "Vision" from the National League for Nursing
calls attention to changes in the healthcare environment that require nurses
to broaden their scope of practice. In this issue, the NLN recaps its
mission and "core values of caring, integrity, diversity and excellence" and
reiterates that the "diversity offered by multiple points of entry into the
nursing profession and variety of progression options available provide an
environment for enrichment and professional growth."
HOW IS "OVERHAULING" THE EDUCATION OF NURSES – ADVOCATED BY THE IOM REPORT –
SITTING WITH NURSES?
Comments from 295 respondents regarding "overhauling" the education of
nurses were compiled and printed in an article nurses are talking about:
Overhauling Nursing Education by Laura A. Stokowskie, RN, MSN in Medscape
Nurses. These comments have been prompted by the changes recommended by
Institute of Medicine (IOM) Future of Nursing Report. The author of the
article states the only conclusion that could be gathered by those 295
comments was that "the only thing nurses agree on is they don’t agree on
anything." She further stated that "opinions were all over the map" and were
"striking in emotion" displayed. There was no consensus on how nurses should
be educated in today’s healthcare environment.
CONCERNS OF THE HEALTHCARE ASSOCIATION OF
PENNSYLVANIA
Hospital-based education, allied health, and graduate medical education were
discussed when the Healthcare Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) met by
conference call in early October. A committee of three was appointed to
consider the recommendations of the IOM report regarding its call for 80%
baccalaureate degree nurses by 2020.

PER DIEM NURSING HAS ADVANTAGES
No longer just meaning where nurses just pick up shifts on a day-to-day
basis, "per diem" has become very flexible and rewarding. Unique
opportunities now come up in unexpected places, such as critical care, ER,
long-term care facilities, pediatrics, telemetry and other high-demand
areas.
WEST VIRGINIA NEWS
In 2005, legislation was passed to place dialysis technicians under the
jurisdiction of the West Virginia RN Board. There are presently 153 dialysis
technicians in West Virginia.
WHAT BENEFIT DOES AND EMPLOYER HAVE IN HIRING
AN INDIVIDUAL UNDER CONTRACT WITH THE WEST VIRGINIA BOARD OF EXAMINERS FOR
REGISTERED NURSES?
The answer is that the employer knows upon employment that this license is
under contract with the board due to some disciplinary action by the board
or through an impaired nurse treatment contract. "The philosophy of the
agreement and also the major terms and conditions of both agreements are the
same, although the effect on the license of both these is significantly
different" (since one is discipline and the other is not).
